Known as Cap Saint Jacques by the French, Vung Tau is a popular seaside town with nice beaches, French villas, serene pagodas on the mountains and an exciting greyhound race track. Just off the coast is Con Dao Islands which is endowed with a national forest, beautiful beaches and precious sea products. This area is now famous for its industrial petroleum and gas development. The handicraft products are also developing with ornaments made from the differences of colourful shells.
Binh Chau thermal spring
About 80km from Vung Tau is the Binh Chau thermal spring (maximum temperature: 84oC), which is said to have curative properties for a number of diseases. A hot bath in a tub will make visitors feel fresh and relaxed after a long trip. The diversified topography of forests, beaches, lakes, hills and creeks also create favorable conditions for such outdoor activities, as camping, trekking, fishing, etc. Besides the area is also convenient for scientific research work on the primeval fauna and flora of tropical seas and forests.
Long Hai Beach
Only 40km from Vung Tau, Long Hai Beach runs along the Chau Long and Chau Vien. At a few spots, the mountains seem to merge into the sea creating magnificent stone beaches. Along the coast, there are several kilometres of cherry orchards. During the blossom season, the scenery is fantastic. Moreover, the beach is very quiet and peaceful which is ideal for lovers and honey-mooners.
Con Dao Islands
Lying 180km south of Vung Tau, the Con Dao Islands is a group of 14 islands surrounded by deep blue ocean and covered in thick vegetation. The largest island in the group, Con Son Island, covers an area of 51 square kilometers and is ringed with bays, white sandy beaches and coral reefs. The European name for this majestic island is Poulo Condore which means “island of squash”. Early this century, it was used as a prison for opponents of French colonialism. There are chartered helicopter and propeller plane flights from Vung Tau to Con Dao Islands. |
