From 1954 to 1975 , the Ben Hai River served as the demarcation line between South Vietnam and North Vietnam . The Demilitarized Zone ( DMZ ) consisted of an area of 5 km to either side of the demarcation line , running more or less parallel to National Route 9 and perpendicular to the Ho Chi Minh Trail . During the Vietnam war , the area just south of the DMZ was scene of some bloodiest battles of the conflict. Dong Ha , Quang Tri , Con Tien , Cam Lo , Khe Sanh , Camp Carrol , the Rock Pile , Lang Vay … became oft-repeated household names in both Vietnam and the US.
